2008 s204 diesel automatic (MB service). Noises.

I've just started the car and I happened to have the windows down. When I engaged "D" I quickly noticed that there was a noise exactly like that of pneumatic hammer drill used by roadworks from far away coming from the front. It disappeared immediately when I moved to "N" and reappeared 1-2 seconds after I moved to "D" (I repeated that few times). I turned the ignition off hoping this was a coincidence and that it was the hammer drill (it sounded exactly like roadworks). After restarting the same thing happened. After revving up it was gone and I drove couple of miles but it didn't reappear. While I was testing I closed the windows but could still hear it and am fairly sure this was the first time.

I have found the following to give you a feel of how it sounded. It was much quieter, 2x-4x times slower and not as heavy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqMzG...utu.be&t=1m51s (more of the metal noise less of the drill hitting the concrete).

Any advice highly appreciated.

Completely unrelated (hopefully):

This leads me to something else that was bothering me for couple of weeks. Stationary and in motion, below and around 1.5krpm.

From somewhere under the bonnet, in my biased opinion from the driver's side there is a quiet but distinct (at least for me and not my partner) whine (more like a distant wind whistle). I spent 15 minutes now trying to locate the source. I couldn't. I am somewhat confident that it's coming from the engine area (centre) not necessarily from the front (where the belt is).

I have uploaded the mp3 recording http://www.4shared.com/mp3/hBhAVMgt/Memo.html?. You should be able to play it online in the browser without downloading anything. Please pay no attention to the RPM variance as this is intentional (around 800-1000rpm in the video). it should seem more apparent just after first second and at 15 seconds but can be heard through most of the time. It can be heard in the cabin but the recording was done with the bonnet lifted. Same with and without AC.

Thank you all for suggestions and questions.
