First Breakdown - kangarooing, no power, and eventual stall

Car has been driving very nicely lately when all of a sudden, going up a hill at 30mph the car starts shaking and losing power.

The engine was kangarooing so pulled over and stopped. Switched engine off, waited a few seconds and then started it again. same problem - engine revs all over the place, will sometimes rev all the way to 4k rpm with gas, sometimes not, sometimes idles, sometimes not, but the result is it always eventually stalls, and then immediately restarts with the same problem.

So does anyone know what could cause a perfectly smooth engine (111.960) to suddenly do this. I managed to drive it about 400m like this and just about park it (legal place but 2ft from kerb - in the process also forgot there weren't good brakes without the engine and smashed a tail light but that's not a major concern at the moment).

Only possible factors i can consider was it was jetwashed 40 miles prior, the fault happened on a very steep hill (so all result are with it pointing up hill) and that's about it. 3/4 a tank of fuel and usual smooth running and good mpg prior to the sudden fault.

No breakdown cover and parked 45 mins from my house so not ideal. Haven't even opened the bonnet as it's late but will have time over the weekend so am grateful for any advice.
