Hi guys
We've just got a 2003 W211 E270 CDI saloon.
There is a weird noise, which we noted upon viewing and asked the previous owner and he said he noticed it also and had it checked and it was just the exhaust knocking on a heat sheild.
However, I'm now not sold on that!!
The noise is as follows: when you go over a bump/bumps you get a hollowing knock noise (hard to discern whereabouts it comes from though) but it happens AFTER the bump.
I assume it won't be suspension as that would happen on the bumps, and this happens slightly afterward.
If the ground has no bumps the noise never happens.
The drive is perfect - even when you get the knock noise.
But it's quite a loud noise, no way anyone could live with it.
A friend has a ramp and he put it on for me. I'm no mechnic, but everything there looked good.
The only thing we noted is the exhaust rubber mounts were starting to perish a bit, so I changed those myself (harder than expected!!!)
We noted that the left side exhaust (near side) is set back a FRACTION further than the right, and the rubber mounts instead of being perfectly vertical, have a slight lean and angle to them. Not 45 degrees, but probably 30. So the exhast sits slightly back. But both pipes meet the cat half way down so not sure if that's normal?
May have no bearing on anything.
Going to test drive it again in the morning but not convinced anymore that it is the exhaust and panicking a bit!!
Any ideas guys?
