Went out today and thought my car looked strangely low at the front. Compared it to my retired 230e that's out to grass in the back garden and confirmed my fears. OH told me to try and drive it whilst he watched to see if the wheels scrubbed on the arches and they did. :(
Carefully drove back up the driveway and a piece of spring and the black rubber cup that it sits in dropped onto the ground. The rest of the spring is hanging down about an inch from the ground. It's the nearside spring, but the offside is low too ( ? ).
Garage had to come and tow it into town for repair (typical, I'm in the AA but don't have Home Start). Will know tomorrow what the damage is.
Just hoping that it's only the springs and not some catastrophically rusted frame like I had on my old one. Am I being paranoid? Is it possible that the spring has fallen out because the place it sits in has rusted away?
