Since we discuss cars on a daily basis here, i thought it useful as well to raise this topic of quality road network in Europe. We all drive lovely cars ranging from 4/6/8/10/12 cylinder engines and as a result are entitled to good roads that will make our suspensions last longer. Our roads on the contrary wreck our suspensions.
I have been travelling to France since childhood and the road stretch from Calais to Côte d'azur precisely St. Tropez is fabolous. Much can't be said of our UK roads. France has one of the best roads in Europe followed by Germany. French roads are meticulously well maintained, i guess because of the (SANEF tollgates). I enjoy driving my V8 anytime am in France and much can't be said of the UK. Crusing in France in a V8 is mind blowing, smooth ride, clean motorway, people keeping good distances, no pot-holes or patches here and there.
I was invited for an Audi meet in France and alot of them were not pleased with our UK roads. They all returned home with wrecked suspensions during their visit at some point in the UK. How can we compare the quality, I travelled from northern France to the south coast, and did not see one set of roadworks. When I returned I was stuck in Dover, then on the A2, then the M25, then the M1 etc etc
The AA must be living in a different world i suppose. Has anyone from their organisation been to France, a country where they know how to build, repair and maintain roads properly! Honestly, in europe our roads are the worst. In most areas, England still exhibits third World road conditions - it's inexcusable in a country whose economy has perhaps the strongest growth rate in the entire EU.
I think our road contractors are missing the whole point ! The information about where they are, and recovery may be good - but there are still far too many of them and they take so long to finish compared with our European counterparts. The M1 near Luton has been going on for nearly 5 years now and it's a constant nightmare....why can't they work on these 24 hours a day?
After the hot summer, lots of roads need to have their surface repaired. Other countries have much hotter summers and colder winters than us and they don't seem to have such problems. Why is our road surfacing of such bad quality?
Please folks, feel free to contribute towards this thread, places you have travelled to in Europe by car, your experiences or what you think of their road conditions compared to ours, how our UK roads ought to be improved/upgraded atleast to compete with other countries in Europe like France, Germany, Holland, Spain & Belgium! Few pictures of Audi Meet in France.
