I have a Sprinter 316 (2700cc) WDB903 which carries a motorhome. It has done about 42,000 miles and at its last service, with a Mercedes specialist, I asked for the polyrib belt to be changed. The belt is in good condition, but is now 10 years old so I thought a change would be good preventive maintenance.
The specialist told me that in order to replace the belt quite a lot of stuff needs to come off the front of the engine, part of which are fibreglass panels from the coach built motorhome. However, there is clear access to the top of the engine where the belt can be seen and also from below when the Merc guard is removed.
I know how the belt is changed by bringing the tensioner pulley over and I know how it is threaded past the fan. I just cannot believe that so much has to come off to do this job. Especially when the correct size spanner can be applied to the tensioner bolt. The specialist said the fan would have to come off and the cowl removed.
Does all this sound right to you?
