S vs C Fuel consumption Experiment

So my 320 cdi has been my commuting car, and this week I am working 94 miles from home, all along the motorway.

My commuting speed has been motorway speeds.

I have been studying the mpg I am getting, as I thought this would be a good chance to do so.

Yesterday on my outward journey, the trip showed 38mpg when I arrived at my destination. This was driving on C mode.

Today same outward journey, I drove on S mode, and the trip showed 36mpg. Speeds were the same as far as I can tell.

So is there a difference in economy between the two modes? Way I understand it is that in normal driving you should drive on S and make use of all the gears (not that this matters when on motorway). But also, I am thinking S holds revs slightly higher, hence slightly lower economy.

I think outside temperatures are about the same yesterday and today.

Other thing is, maybe I just spend slightly longer at higher speed today than yesterday which accounts for the 2mpg difference?

ps I also check and calculate brim to brim on each fill up and the trip is usually 2mpg optimistic. Either way, I don't care how bad economy I get as the car is so comfortable it is worth it. But I do want to know how C and S effects things and tomorrow morning I am even considering lowering my speed to 60 to see how much it really effects things. (I am guessing it would just about go above 40mpg, which for the pain of driving at 60 would not be worth it!)
