What did I break?!

As per this thread I've been trying to find a vacuum leak in my w124 230e.

Took off the air filter housing and had a good look around all the vacuum hoses and pipes. Found one that was torn. Top of the engine in the middle, looked like an oil breather. Replaced that. Started it up. No difference to the economy needle.

Covered the air intake completely. Idle speed unaffected. So it must be getting air from somewhere else right?

Took off the air filter housing again. Checked all the pipes again. Nothing disconnected. Cleaned the MAF and plate and the throat of the MAF. Lots of oily gunk removed. Checked the throttle wire connection, made sure it was nice and smooth. Generally cleaned everything down.

Putting everything back together but now it runs like a DOG. Idle is rough and labours for a while, then dies. Can drive it but will cut out when manoeuvring and revs are low. Someone please tell me I haven't ****ed the MAF.

Help!!

Edit:
This is the hose I replaced: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w201...ml#post2789948? What is the purpose of it?
