I'm still having transmission problems with my 2004 E320 CDi, despite having had an ATF and filter change.
When I went to start the car this morning (it hadn't been run over the weekend), I got a 'red' warning display in the speedo showing a picture of a battery and the words "Visit workshop". This has been stored as '1 malfunction'. I've had this message once before a few weeks ago. On that occasion the warning did not store as a malfunction.
I was very surprised to see the 'red' battery warning this morning, as I had the battery on charge for most of yesterday (Sunday), as I am aware that it is the original battery and the recent cold weather has given it a hard time.
Nonetheless, the car cranked and started fine, despite the battery warning. As I drove off however, there was a loud 'droning' noise from the torque convertor, the gears really snatched, and the gear changes were all over the place. It seemed that the transmission had completely lost the plot.
After a few miles and with the engine and transmission up to temperature, the problems went away, as they always do.
I know that the 722.6 transmission is very susceptible to low battery voltage, so I'm now considering the possibility that the battery might be the problem, even though I had discounted it earlier.
Does the 'red' battery "Visit workshop" warning always mean low battery voltage, or does it also cover other electrical problems?
I am now considering fitting a new battery. The standard battery seems to be a Varta AGM (Gel Type) Part No. 096 (Short Code E39).
What are the implications of fitting a new battery? Is there anything to watch out for? Does anything need to be reset once the new battery has been fitted and power restored? Will I need radio codes, etc.?
Thanks,
Razoo
