E200 ignition barrel replacement?

I have accessed the barrel assembly which is loose and the wires disconnected but cannot remove the barrel.
The key does not turn currently but it can occasionally be made to do so but it is down to luck.
The car is 1996 E200 2000.
any ideas on removal?
