My MY2000 W210 E320 CDI is playing up.
I have had it diagnosed on a Star machine (again) with no conclusive results (no faults showing apart from the normal Command ones and a few other non-consequential ones) and I'm hoping that someone here can confirm or deny his suspicions.
When the car is cold, everything is fine and the following never occurs.
When it is warmed up I have 3 problems.
Firstly it sometimes loses power (almost totally) and kicks lots of black smoke from the exhaust. After nursing it along in this mode/state for 20 seconds or so it will go into a mode/state where it will not rev over 3000 and won't kick down. Tiptronic works fine and it drives OK, (70MPH no problem) but feels a bit "wooly".
Secondly, it will sometimes go into this 3000 rev/no kick down without the almost total loss of power, usually after waiting at lights or, bizarrely going round a few corners. Both the first and second symptoms can be cleared by turning off the ignition and restarting.
Lastly when it has been in this state, if I stop the car then restart, the starter motor will only engage the flywheel 1 out of 5 times. At all other times its fine.
My man with the Star machine has suggested the ring gear as the problem. He has said that there are no recorded errors that point to anything electrical being wrong. He has checked the gearbox for oil and that is OK.
This work is beyond my capability (my toolkit is a bread knife and a hammer!) so to pay someone to do the job and then find a mis-diagnosis is not really an option, as we are looking around £750.
I would really appreciate some of the expert opinion that abounds on this forum.
Thank you in advance. Stuart.
