I have a 1998 W202 C180 Esprit Estate (face lift model) which has a bizarre wiper problem. This only happens when the weather is cold. When I get in the car and turn the wipers on to intermittent to clear the screen and then try to turn them off they appear to have a mind of their own. They will usually operate for an additional 10 - 20 sweeps before stopping. Sometimes they will stop part way back to the park position and sometimes I have to turn the wipers on to high speed then back off again to make them stop. As stated, this only happens when the weather is cold (eg, it has dropped below freezing over night). When warmer they appear to work fine.
Are the wipers controlled by CAN BUS like the windows are? I have had some CAN issues with other systems - the windows developed a mind of their own but the fault was traced to the CAN receiver in the o/s rear door. The engine check light sometimes comes on when operating the rear window wiper, again I suspect a CAN issue. I'm wondering if this is yet another CAN quirk? A code reader shows nothing stored in the way of fault codes.
